One of the most exciting parts of getting into a new hobby is picking out all the equipment you need to get started. If you have just recently been introduced to marijuana and are ready to stop bumming paraphernalia off your friends, it’s time to start investing in some accessories for yourself. Fortunately, it is pretty easy to find all the paraphernalia you need, whether online or at your local head shop or dispensary. Without further ado, here are the essentials you need to invest in to be a true cannabis enthusiast.

Grinder

You may have seen your friends use grinders and been curious about whether or not they are really worth the investment. In our opinion, it is. Grinders are a handy tool that allow you to break up your cannabis into small bits. This is advantageous whether you are smoking a bowl or using it to roll a joint. Having the cannabis broken into smaller pieces ensures smoother smoking, and grinders save you time in the process (plus you can avoid getting your fingers too sticky!). In addition, while there are grinders that simply break up the weed, it is more common to come across four-part grinders that offer a kief catcher.

Kief catchers are the bottom chamber that is below the screen of the grinder. They are used to collect the crystal kief that is knocked loose from the marijuana as you grind it. Kief is made of the dried resin glands from the leaves of the cannabis plant and contains a high concentration of THC. It is a great way to take your high to the next level by sprinkling it on top of your bowl. You can also use it to make your own hash or edibles.

An Airtight Container

Storage method has way more of an impact than you realize when it comes to cannabis. It’s important for your weed to be stored in an airtight, dark, and humid environment. This is because oxygen and UV light degrade the THC in your weed, and drying the weed out takes away the taste. This is because the flavor is stored in the trichomes, the sticky hairs you can feel on the bud. This both protects the marijuana from predators and allows the user to taste the flavors of the terpenes.

When choosing a container to store your bud, go for glass. While plastic can be effective, the static charge it generates causes the weed particles to adhere to the container, so you may lose out on some ganja if you do. In general, a glass mason jar makes a great container for weed. Its humidity and oxygen control ensure that your weed stays sticky and pungent. In addition, if you are investing in multiple strains, keep them in separate jars to preserve the taste and flavor.

A Bowl

While you will thoroughly enough our high-quality blunts, we also know that smoking a blunt every time you want to indulge in cannabis is not always realistic. Everyone cannabis enthusiast needs a piece that will let them enjoy some flower whenever they please. Make sure to invest in a glass piece, as it is harmful to smoke out of plastic. Go to your friendly neighborhood headshop for guidance on which bowl is best for you.

Pipe Screens

This is an often overlooked accessory that can be a total game changer. Every marijuana enthusiast has had the misfortune to take a hit, only to have a few pieces of torched weed fly to the back of their throat (also known as a Scooby Snack). This is not only an unpleasant sensation, it is also a waste of your stash. Luckily, pipe screens are an inexpensive and easy way to prevent this problem.

Ashtray

If you will be smoking indoors, this is an absolute must-have. You don’t know how important an ashtray is until you are passing around a blunt and suddenly, there is an inch of ash and nowhere to put it. Keep an ashtray handy anytime you smoke, even if you are using your bowl and not smoking a blunt.

Lighters

This may seem like a no-brainer, but if you have ever attended a smoke session where someone forgot a lighter, you know how important it can be. It’s best to have several lighters floating around to ensure that you are always prepared. Make sure to at least have one where you store your piece and weed, and consider investing in one to keep in your pocket or purse and one to keep in your car, just in case.

A Roach Clip

This is definitely necessary if you’re a fan of our blunts and want them to go around as long as possible. With a roach clip, when the blunt begins to burn down to almost nothing (a “roach”), you don’t have to worry about scorching your fingers if you’re still hitting it.

Pipe Cleaning Materials

In the life of every stoner comes a time when your pipe becomes too clogged to smoke out of. This moment doesn’t have to be the end of the world, particularly if you take the time to clean it regularly. Make sure you have some sort of poker that will fit into your bowl to manually clean out the resin. You might find it helpful to heat up the pipe if you go this route, as this will make the resin tacky and easier to manipulate.

In addition, you will want to clear your pipe with some kind of solution. You can often find premade solutions in headshops and at dispensaries, or you can make your own at home using a mixture of isopropyl alcohol and sea salt. Simply place your pipe in a plastic sandwich bag full of the solution and shake. For pipes that haven’t been cleaned in a long time, you may need to let them soak in the solution for a while.
